When I joined Akkroo at the start of the year, one of the things that appealed to me was the team’s flexible approach to work.
I took the decision to go freelance when I returned to work after having my children, because that seemed like the best way to create a flexible work life for myself, but in Akkroo I’ve found an employer that works just as well.
One of our co-founders lives in Birmingham, so comes into our office in Brixton, London, three days a week, and works from home the other two.
One of my other colleagues is training to be a pilot, so fits his work around that.
But starting a new job can always feel like a risk, so I wasn’t sure how it would work for me. It turns out I didn’t need to worry. The whole Akkroo team has been consistently supportive of my flexible working, and I can’t thank them enough.
Flexible working as standard
I have a four day working week as standard. This makes it easier in terms of childcare, and I can also schedule my day so that I’m able to manage school pick ups and drop offs (one of the benefits of my sales role, so I can schedule calls around other parts of my life).
Working from another location
Summer holidays! Any working parent knows that the summer holidays can be a struggle to balance childcare, family time and work. But thanks to Akkroo’s flexibility I was able to join my family on a fantastic 3-week trip to Italy and Croatia this summer.
While away, I did a few days working in Rome – I got much more done than normal away from the distractions of the office, but I really missed the office banter and having the team around me! But this really paid off – I closed three new customer deals while away.
Travelling for work
I love going to events – the rest of the team tease me about how much I enjoy getting out and talking to people, networking and meeting new potential customers.
Just last week I drove up to rainy Liverpool on the Bank Holiday Monday, to support a new customer at one of their events. As such, I was able to take a day off in lieu, which means I’ve been able to pick my little ones up on their first days back at nursery and school after the holidays.
And next month I’m heading to MarTech East in Boston! While this means time away from my family, I’m excited to have the opportunity to represent Akkroo and hopefully make some great new connections while I’m there.
Flexibility works both ways
To sum up, the biggest thing I’ve learned is that flexibility works both ways. Akkroo have been wonderful at creating a flexible work environment for me (and the rest of the team). For me, this means I’m willing to work in the evenings sometimes to speak to our US prospects, or travel out-of-hours to get to customer events.
Those of you who know me, know that I used to be freelance to get all this flexibility, and long summers with my family. I am so glad I’ve found an employer offering this flexibility to work around my life choices.
In my role with Akkroo I get the balance and support that makes it work. To close, I’d like to say thank you to Chris, Andy, Laura and the rest of the team for creating a modern, flexible and supportive working environment. And finally – take a look at the current roles we’re hiring for at Akkroo!
